WHEREAS, the Town of Harbour Grace is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living and visiting our community; and
WHEREAS, roughly half of fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Town of Harbour Grace residents should test smoke alarms at least once a month; and
WHEREAS, smoke alarms, with their ability to sense smoke well before you can, play a crucial role in alerting you to danger in the event of fire, potentially providing you with as little as two minutes to escape safely; and
WHEREAS, residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will, therefore, be more likely to survive a fire; and
WHEREAS, the collective efforts of the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade, along with the active participation of our residents, are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home injuries through fire prevention education and enforcement activities; and
WHEREAS, the 2024 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you,” reminds us of the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Don Coombs, Mayor of the Town of Harbour Grace, do hereby proclaim October 6 – 12, 2024, as Fire Prevention Week in Harbour Grace. I urge all residents to ensure their homes have working smoke alarms and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade.
