A message from Health Canada:
When did you last test for radon? November is a perfect time to start your home radon test!
Every region in Canada has homes with high levels of radon — make sure yours isn’t one of them. This radioactive gas can easily enter through cracks and gaps in the floors and walls that are in contact with the ground. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it.
Exposure to high levels of radon can lead to lung cancer. It’s estimated that over 3000 Canadians a year die from radon-induced lung cancer, making it the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Testing your home for radon is easy to do. You can buy a do-it-yourself test kit or contact a certified radon professional. Some local libraries also have lending programs for radon detectors. Find out more on the Take Action on Radon webpage, including the steps to reduce radon if the level is high.
